From Google…..

We first stayed here in August for eight days and loved it,just stayed again for another nine days and absolutely enjoyed our stay.We had a problem with our car breaking down the day before we were going and Ann and Alan were so good about it on leaving, they are lovely kind people and we can’t wait to come back again when the site re opens. It’s in a fantastic location for visiting other areas too…..I highly recommend!

What a lovely place to set up camp! A stones throw from Dartmoor. The Holiday site managers were friendly and very helpful, nothing was to much trouble for them.

Spent 4 days here at the end of September, and had a great time. It has got to be one of the best campsites for walking across Dartmoor, and even has a superb view of the tors from the top of the site. The pitches are a good size, and it is t is neat and clean. The showers provide instant hot water which never runs out – and they are free. I have read they are too hot – total rubbish. It has a dog walking circuit and a small licensed shop. In the immediate area there are two good pubs within walking distance with good food. I will certainly be back.

Nice site overlooking Dartmoor. Camping at top of site. Good showers/toilets and a small shop. WiFi available but you need to buy access so ask when you book in. Five minutes to the pub! If you walk here the Granite Way from Okehampton takes you over Dartmoor. Fab views all round.

Owners couldn’t be more helpful, they even found and printed out the details of the nearest Mazda main dealers for us as the car is playing up. Nice pitch and clean toilets. Good TV reception & wifi for £5 a week.

Went tent camping here for 4 days with our pup and had a great time! The people that run it are very nice.
Facilities: Clean and nice (except the hand dryer in the womans restroom didn’t work). Lots of bathroom stalls, plenty of showers, and they have a dish washing area with racks.
Location: Awesome! Right next to the gorge which is a must see. Lots of pubs and other trails too.
Campground: Well maintained. They have a dog walking path with lots of bins that I appreciated too.
Would definitely return!

Peaceful site, friendly and helpful owners and staff, bus stop 2 minutes walk away, great facilities block, Lydford Gorge within walking distance, Dartmoor and Granite Trail nearby.

Just had a 2 night stay here and would thoroughly recommend the site. Very clean and tidy and were made to feel very welcome. Can’t wait to visit again

This truly is a beautiful site in all ways. Grass is kept perfectly as are the toilets and showers plus the staff go out of their way to be helpful. Go on try it.

Lovely quite place, dog friendly and good enough shop. Nice showers and facilities.
So close to the gorge and a lovely pub for food.

Spacious pitches, lovely location with lots to see in the area. Feel the toilet block was not as clean as when we stayed previously, missing shower curtains, shower stools, hand soap dispenser broken etc

I love this little camp site. Peaceful well run site, in a lovely little village with an excellent pub, good walks and other good pubs within walking distance. The view from the top of the site on a nice evening is sublime.

Stayed here for three nights and loved it. It is a lovely little site with friendly and helpful wardens. Excellent location for the moor and great cycling. Village pub is vibrant with good food too. Lydford gorge is not to be missed. Will definitely return

Ideal spot, lovely site.

We came here with friends and were going to do some walking around the area. Unfortunately it rained heavily so that was abandoned the first day. There is a pub just down the road, which is perfect for a drink after a walk or a meal. The site is very well laid out and the toilets and showers were spotless, the water hot and a hairdryer is available as well. It’s an ideal location for walking and not too far from the moor as well. Would definitely return.

Another great stay

We have stayed on this beautiful ,well kept and expertly run site for a couple of weeks and we are quite baffled by the comments left by a family that stayed here too in August. There have been no bbq’s the whole site is very clean and staff are really helpful at all times. We have visited this site for many years and will be back very soon

Well run site, great location, very peaceful.

Last couple of years camping holidays have been marred slightly by feral kids, inconsiderate adults and stray dogs. What a welcome relief at Lydford. If you want a quiet site, with outstanding views and the ability to sit and watch the bats in the evening, then Lydford is the place for you. Not once did I have to listen to someone else’s music, endure screaming kids running round or have to kick a dog out of my tent. Staff were around, but very much ‘in the background’ – a smile and a wave as we drove in and out, but very unobtrusive. However, if you are unable to be considerate, I’m sure you would be spoken to. Showers and toilets were all spotlessly clean, but are perhaps in need of an update. There are plenty of them, so never needed to queue. Great pub in the village too!

Testimonials from  2018

Lovely quiet well run site, the staff are very friendly. They put on a bbq “get to know your neighbour” for those that were interested, they provided the food and had a price list, it was enjoyable and friendly. They try to put something on every now and then.
Lovely clean facilities, and clean and tidy site.
It got a little busier at the weekend we were there.
We preferred being on a grass pitch with electric, we felt more in the open! There are hard standings that are nearer to the showers etc.
A small shop on site with a few essentials like milk/sausages/canned foods etc.. enough to get by..
3 pubs in walking distance.
Lydford gorge nearby
Granite way..
A little farm shop on A386 as you turn into lydford, they were really friendly people running it, worth a visit, they sold a really nice locally raspberry sorbet (I normally don’t like sorbet),I would have it again

We booked in for one night at Lydford caravan and camping site, we quickly decided that we needed to stay longer because it was such an interesting area to explore. The staff were very helpful and slotted us in for another night . We arrived around 3 o’clock and got straight round to visiting Lydford Gorge which is a few minutes walk away we did the devils caldron first (it was stunning) ) . We got back around tea time and then needed to eat , we asked the staff at Lydford For directions to the Fox and Hounds pub (as they do the best chips ever ) it was a long walk and they kindly offered to give us a lift and we greatly accepted . We walked the rest of the gorge the next day. We had a fantastic stay at the camp site and the staff were fantastic , clean showers lovely site and lovely people We can’t wait to go back . ( I left a shirt there the staff found it and posted it back to us ). Thank you .

John and Dora

Fantastic service with a smile from the staff during our stay this week made it a trip to remember!
They stopped work immediately to help us and supplied an extension cable when our’s was too short, opened the shop to sell us ice cream after a long hot walk and on another occasion to provide us with a cream tea!
On Saturday evening they have a BBQ, supplying and cooking all the food for the guests.
Thanks for making our stay so enjoyable.
We look forward to returning soon.

We spent a lovely evening here on our way home to Bude; a very pretty site in a great location for walks and pub. Wish we could have stayed longer and glad it’s almost on our doorstep as we get to go again…and again! Hosts were fabulous, very welcoming! Thank you for a super stay.

We had an unexpected free night whilst travelling home and thought we would revisit an old haunt so rang on the off chance they had a pitch
We received a very friendly affirmative and booked
Although we arrived early we were made very welcome and given a choice of pitches
The site and facilities were faultless and exceptionally clean and beautifully maintained we now remember why it was a regular destination and can’t wait to come back, we certainly won’t be leaving it so long this time
Thank you for a wonderful experience

Chris R

We stayed here with a group of 8 friends and one of our group had a bad knee and wasn’t able to walk to the pub for a Birthday Celebration meal. We couldn’t find a taxi company in the locality but Helen and Allan the wardens offered to take her and pick her up again. What kindness, we really appreciated the gesture.
This is a beautiful setting and quaint little village with lots around to do and see. We are off on a cycle ride today along a good trail that goes into Okehampton. We will be back here again soon for sure.

Quiet views of Dartmoor

We have just spent six nights on this site, which is well laid out and cared for. We were in the lower ‘Tavy Field’, the upper end of which has lovely views across to the western edge of Dartmoor. The wardens were very welcoming and helpful. There is a dog walk around the upper grass field, which also has great views. Although the weather was not too kind during our visit, there are plenty of visits and walks available in the local area. In particular, the ‘Granite Trail’ along the old LSWR route from Okehampton to Plymouth is now tarmac from Lydford to Okehampton and thus provides a lovely walking route when other footpaths are impassable. Tavistock is an interesting old market town, which also has well maintained paths beside the River Tavy together with a towpath walk along the old canal, which originally connected the town to the River Tamar at Morwellham Quay. A lovely site and area to which we hope and expect to return. Paul and Maggie (plus Stella the dog)

Another great time

Just returned from another stay at this great site. As always the site was clean and well managed. Cant wait to go again.

Stayed here for one night, can’t fault the place staff friendly and very helpful, nice personal service, very peaceful campsite nice to hear the birds singing at dawn. Lovely views and very well kept pitches. Plenty of space between vans allowing privacy. Toilets, showers and dish washing area kept very clean and fresh smelling. Surrounding area has lots to offer including great walks and bike rides.

Great site , very clean and tidy . All facilities were fantastic, are very helpful and pleasant owner and staff. Location on the edge of Dartmoor goes without saying. 10 out of 10.

Peaceful and relaxing site with plenty of activities to do close by. Clean toilets and showers. Warm welcome on arrival and friendly throughout our stay. Definitely coming back.

Beautifully peaceful site, well positioned on the edge of Lydford Village. Within walking distance of Lydford Gorge approx 1 mile. Sit well layed out with both grass and hard standing, toilet block a little old and tired. Very friendly staff.

Our first time on this site showers are spotless and smell so clean! ( so happy camper here!)
Staff very friendly good size pitches will be the first of many visits

Love it . Well kept . Facilities immaculate … would recommend visit definitely. Nice walks … nice quaint area nice local pubs …what’s not to like … visiting the gorge today even though it’s raining …..

Stayed in a tent which is slightly up a hill from the caravans and you get a stunning view of some of the hills in Dartmoor. Staff were welcoming and was a clean campsite. Accessibility to walks and other sights was good as we walked from the campsite to Great Links Tor via Brat Tor which I would recommend for a walker who wants a slightly longer day walk. Only stayed for a few nights but wish it could have been longer

Stayed for a 3 night long weekend and …. wished it could be longer!

Stayed for a 3 night long weekend and …. wished it could be longer! Lydford Caravan and Camping Park is set on the very edge of stunning scenery of Dartmoor National Park. The site itself is of a very good standard, with pitches to meet most tastes and requirements. As has been mentioned, the amenity block is functional and is exceptionally clean and usable. One of the best things of course are the views eastwards towards Brat Tor (sometimes known as “Bray Tor”) and the rest of the Moors. There is an excellent dog walk around the edges of the top field (did I mention the brilliant views?) , and although dogs must be kept on a lead whilst on the site, there is a large playing field a short walk from the site entrance. The freedom and beauty of Dartmoor isn’t too far either, for the more energetic as is the “Granite Way”. This is a cycle way that runs along the old Okehampton railway, in a similar fashion to the Tarka trail. Great for cyclists and walkers. There’s much to see and do locally also. Lydford village is a short walk away, with a church that has 9th Century origins and Castle (originally a prison) of similar age. Keep going, down a steep hill, and you’ll come to Lydford Gorge, a fantastic natural deep canyon (gorge) that’s definitely worth a visit. So, finally, as the site is next to the A386 and not far from the A30, Lydford Caravan and Camping Park makes a great base for exploring Devon and Cornwall.

What a gem

This site is in one of the best that we have stayed on in 34 years of membership. The staff were approachable and very friendly. It is in a wonderous location with plenty of walking from site. It is kept tidy and although there have been comments that the loo block is dated this does not distract from the fact that the facilities are kept immaculately clean, they are constantly being checked for any problems. There is a wide choice of pitches some with the most wonderful views of Dartmoor. There are plenty of pubs within walking distance. We will be returning in the future, we feel the club could learn a few lessons from this site.

Lovely site!

Just spent 6 nights at this lovely, peaceful, relaxing site. Location is excellent -situated on the edge of Dartmoor and a visit to Lydford Gorge is a must. Some places in Cornwall are also within reach. The wardens are very friendly and go that little bit further to ensure that you have a good holiday. Would definitely recommend this site!

Relaxing stay

The site is well maintained. w/c and showers were always clean and tidy. The dog walk around the field was clean and had plenty of bins .The area for us was a base to explore and go for walks with the dog and of course a few pubs. The staff were helpful and friendly and local knowledge helped to plan our walks. We would use this site again in the near future. Thank you for our stay.

Great for Motorhomers & Lydford Gorge

Just got back in April, Lovely site within walking distance of Lydford Village & Gorge, excellent roads with bus stop near for further afield, being in a motorhome we prefer to walk & this is now a favourite for us. Toilets & showers a little dated but spotless, very friendly wardens who seem to go that little bit further, turn right to get to Lydford Castle & Gorge, turn left for the Granite walk to Dartmoor. Amazing views of Dartmoor from the site and near was we were told is a good pub. Lydford village is where time forgot, stone cottages, no running gas or street lights here. There are also other National Trust & English Heritage sites nearby. We also went to Buckland Abbey which is another NT property worth seeing. Will be back again if only to see the Gorge in a different season.

Great Location for Walking

We stayed at this site for a week in March. The staff were all very welcoming and the facilities were clean and tidy. This is a great location for exploring the west side of Dartmoor and there are numerous walks from the site so no need to drive very far. You can see our walks and the places we visited whilst staying here on our blog

Peaceful, well kept with friendly hosts

This affiliated site really tries harder for all its guests, including personal pitch choice to suit your needs….never had that before…well done Colin. We stayed a couple days and did the National Trust visits to Lydford Gorge and Buckland Abbey, plus transiting Dartmoor for Tor exploration. This is a very peaceful place and has great doggy walk areas with great views of Dartmoor and spotless facilities with a small well stocked shop in reception. The only sound you may hear at night is hooting owls. No traffic, no aircraft noise. We found Lydford Camping Park a charming place and well located for any west Devon activity.

Great location, and friendly staff

Stayed here for 3 nights. After a horrendous journey there, the staff were extremely patient and accommodating of our late arrival and even lent us a longer cable as ours didn’t reach the hook up point. Lovely clean site, showers are great. Good size pitches. Little shop in the office for essentials. My only comment is that if you are bringing dogs the ‘onsite walk’ is on lead only and you do need to go off site if you want to give your dogs a bit of a run about, but there is a sports field a very short walk away that you are able to use. I would stay again and would recommend to friends.

Wet March week

Wet & windy Dartmoor last week, enjoyed it despite the weather. Lots of walking and places to visit locally. Lydford Gorge a must, Dartmoor itself superb walking and touring, Buckland Abbey a brilliant National Trust attraction. The site is very rural, a few pubs locally, Bearslake Inn, Castle Inn both very nice, decent food and reasonable value. Not much else in Lydford but great place to relax. Site was clean & tidy, shower block more than sufficient & all well managed by a very friendly and efficient team of Wardens. I can see that the grass might get worn and muddy this time of the year as the on site roads are narrow and there is not much hard standing for parking by your pitch. Having said that thoroughly enjoyed our stay and will come back again one day.

Tranquil Place

We stayed on the campsite in our campervan for 3 nights (T, F & S). Plenty of stuff to keep us occupied; the three nights were just right to enjoy the Lydford Gorge, The Granite Way, moorland walks and Finch Foundry on the way home. Super attentive staff, very clean utilities, well kept pitches and views on site to boot.

Little quiet site – lovely

We have been coming to this site quite a lot the last two years and enjoy the views and Tavistock which is up the road. Toilets are clean, and the wardens are great – we will going back in October. Love Lydford – such a peaceful village and there are lovely walks and bike rides if you have your bikes.

Nice and quiet campsite near Dartmoor

We spent a week on this very well kept campsite. We were unlucky with the weather as it was nice on arrival but got poor during the week, but we still had a great stay.
On arrival the reception was very friendly, checked us in and after providing us with a good amount of local and site information we were directed and guided to the tent area as we would be camping in our large family tent.
Together with the warden we picked the best suitable spot for the upcoming wet weather, and set up camp there.

The site is well kept and divided over several individual fields with a lot of hardstands and a large tent area with both electrified (16A) and non-electrified large pitches.
The toilet and showerblock is of good quality and thoroughly cleaned daily between 11:00 and 12:30. In this timeframe another toilet is available.
The showers have a push button which provides water for only half a minute or so when pressed. This can be annoying when you want a relaxing shower after a long walk without constantly pushing a button for water.
Dishwashing area is also clean and has 4 large sinks and sufficient hot water.

The only thing which raised my brow is that even in 2017 WIFI apparently is an issue in rural areas. This site has a WIFI hotspot, but the signal strength next to it is so poor and narrowed down in bandwith that it was virtually impossible to download the daily newspaper (a <5 MB PDF file) or to look up local information.

In general it is a nice and quiet site where people are mainly minding their own business and enjoying their holiday or weekend. I have seen little social interaction between campers.

Closest pub to the site is “the Castle Inn”, which serves good ales and good quality food. A little longer walk goes to “the Dartmoor Inn” which is a more upscale restaurant with matching pricing. very good quality, but a bit to the expensive side.

Large supermarkets can be found in Tavistock, a 20 minute drive from the campsite, however the site shop also has basic supplies.

Week of bliss

Stayed here for a week in May – excellent from booking to leaving
Great friendly staff always ready for a chat, helpful advice and guidance.

Pitches are slightly tight but no worries there.

Lovely views from the back field across Dartmoor

Walkable to the local dog friendly pub

Farm type shop at top of road, bit limited in choice – more deli than supermarket but all the basics and some nice treats

If coming from afar you must try the local Hogs Pudding – awesome

Only downside the free internet only works within 20 metres of the washroom – so its not campsite wide

Staff absolutely AMAZING! Perfect for camping, great walks and nearby pubs!

The staff were absolutely amazing, it was perfectly located for walks and had everything you could possibly need for a very comfortable camping holiday. Showers were free to use, always very clean and hot water available. We came as a couple mainly for hiking and sampling of the local pubs, and so The Castle which is a short distance away was perfect for us. The Lydford Gorge didn’t massively appeal to us as it was a bit tame in terms of terrain but I can see it being perfect for kids and so a great location for families as it was only a very short walk away with tea rooms and lovely views of the waterfall. I just wouldn’t recommend for any seasoned trekkers looking for a bit more adventure. We drove to Chagford which is a gorgeous little town and walked to Castle Drogo along the River Teign which was awesome.

Peaceful campsite with excellent facilities

Two of us plus small dog in our caravan, perfect location for relaxing, walking etc. A local bus service runs between Okehampton and Tavistock. Helpful friendly staff, spotless facilities. Central heating in shower rooms. Good laundry, wifi zone hot spot with chairs to sit whilst on line. I managed to connect to wifi in our caravan, in sight of the zone.
Nothing to fault about this lovely site.

Excellent Campsite

Had a lovely few days at this excellent campsite. The wardens Colin and Shirley gave us a very warm welcome on arrival and were very helpful throughout our stay here. We had a choice of pitches and chose a pitch in Tavy Field with amazing views of Dartmoor. There was a well stocked shop and lots of local information was available including the weather forecast for the area. The toilet/shower facilities were extremely clean and well cared for throughout our stay. The whole site was well maintained and we were impressed with the flower displays in the borders and around the entrance. This is a nice quiet site and perfect for a relaxing break in the countryside. This site is in a perfect location with the Granite Way cycle trail very close by and an excellent village pub just up the road. The National Trust’s Lydford Gorge is a very pleasant walk away and worth a visit. Would recommend a stay at this campsite, you won’t be disapointed and we will definately be returning soon.

Another excellent stay

We stayed for 4 nights over the Easter holiday, and as usual had a brilliant stay. The staff are extremely helpful, and on arrival we were shown several pitches to choose from, all of which would have suited us fine. The site is very well kept, the grounds are well maintained as are all the facilities.
We walked the moors on our first day, the weather was on our side and there were spectacular views from the top of the tors. We walked over to Bleak House and then back along the old railway line. The next day we cycled to Okehampton along the Granite Way, an easy ride through beautiful and differing countryside. On our final day we cycled into Lydford Forest, somewhere we had not been before. Although not huge we had a more strenuous ride for the morning, plenty of hills to tackle. On Saturday night we ate at the Castle inn in the village, great food, but you definitly need to book in advance. This is such a good site to stay on, and we can’t wait for our next visit.

Relaxing break

Just returned from a fabulous weekend away at Lydford caravan and camping park. The managers could not have been more helpful – very welcoming, even when we were delayed and therefore late arriving, always friendly and the whole park was exceptionally clean and well maintained. We have stayed at many sites in the area and cannot believe we haven’t been here before – a real gem of a site!
The dog walk is perfect – just long enough for a decent stretch and there are plenty of bins etc. Dogs must stay on leads which is perfect for us as one of our dogs is nervous of others so it prevents any unpleasant encounters! There is however a field nearby that you can let your dog off-lead if you so desire.
The nearby pub has a wide selection of good food and there are some cracking walks accessible from the site.
Dishwashing facilities are exceptionally good. Outstanding views from the site, particularly the top of the dog walk.
I cannot wait to visit again – perfect mix of relaxation and things to do nearby if wanted.
We’ll be back!!

June visit

Booked and stayed three nights in June, met by great manager an his wife helped us out with some wood chocks as I had damaged the rear van steadies on the journey down. We found all the staff were very pleasant, nice and clean facilities, free Wi Fi hotspot in the laundry, just wish we had stayed longer but had fourteen nights booked in Cornwall a very nice site.

Testimonials from  August – November 2016

Return visit.  Stopped here on our way down to Cornwall. Lovely situation, good facilities and friendly helpful wardens. Would thoroughly recommend this site for a short or long stay.

Second visit.  We were welcomed by the lovely friendly wardens who work so hard to keep standards up. This site is perfect for walking the gorge. I would say pitches are small and tight, plus facilities due for an overhaul.

Very nice.  Stayed 2 nights at lydford and enjoyed it very much . Lydford Gorge is a must The castle pub . church and castle are worth a look over . Wardens are very helpful , site WiFi . clean facilities block .all in all a very nice stop on the way to Lands End.

Peaceful retreat.  Stayed a week from end of August until 3rd Sept.  Wardens very efficient and helpful, very peaceful site in local non tourist village.  Excellent meals in the Castle, proper local pub and only 10 minute walk.  Glad we booked as very popular.   We were lucky to be able to access the site wifi from our pitch and had good service all week.  Toilets clean if not fancy. About 30 miles to Bude on north coast and Plymouth south so good central location for days out.  Would definitely go again.  As with most sites on the network, this one suffers from early arrivers, and there really is no room at the entrance to wait so wardens have to accept them.  We waited in a lay by until the right time, turns out we were 6th to check in! Obviously they may not be members as this is an AS.

Great little site.  We stayed a this site for two nights on our way down to Cornwall, the wardens are very friendly & helpful. We went into the far field which has the better views over Dartmoor, nice well spaced pitches but some did need a long electric cable. Lydford Gorge is an easy walk away along with the cycle trail which goes into Oakhampton. We felt that the facilities block was in need of some up dating now but was still clean & usable with plenty of hot water available. Definitely one to return to.

Fantastic Site.  A firm favourite of ours for visiting in August, very peaceful and friendly site. The wardens are fantastic and extremely helpful. We stayed last weekend and unfortunately one of our dogs was poorly, the warden took us to the local vet and we got it sorted, our peaceful bank holiday weekend was saved, many thanks. The village of Lydford is tranquil and beautiful, pub is great and has a great beer garden and there is a farm shop which sells great produce. Granite way is very close so good for cyclists and lots of good walks from the site.

Great welcome.  We stayed 4 nights on this lovely site. We were met at the gate by the friendly staff and were allowed to choose our pitch from several that were available. We were given very helpful information on the area. We enjoyed a walk in nearby Lydford Gorge, a cycle ride along the Granite Way to Oakhampton and a walk up Brat Tor all within walking distance from the site. We were advised that wireless reception was best available from the laundry room which had a seating area but we found we had good reception from our pitch. The toilets and showers were immaculately clean and the view over Dartmoor was fantastic. This site was one of our favourite sites for a short break and the staff are second to none. Highly recommended if you like peace and quiet with walking and cycling easily accessible from site.

A wonderful base to explore heaven on earth. The site is really clean, well managed by a really friendly bunch who provide those extra services for you. The doggy areas are wonderful and well away from the pitches. The local pub does great grub, but get there early to avoid waiting, or share a table and make new friends like we did.

Peaceful site. Very clean showers very helpful wardens local church very good visit good bus service in village lydford gorge well worth a visit you will need good boots a long hike but well worth it if you cant do the whole lot you can catch the bus back

Fantastic friendly site.  Just returned from a quick 2 night break in this idyllic location and will definitely be returning. From the moment we arrived we could feel our blood pressure reducing!
The wardens were great (shame they are stepping down this year although they are staying on as volunteers!)
We were given a choice of pitching and chose a beautiful level one with views over the moors. The access to the site was good if you follow the directions. We walked to Lydford gorge which was a 20 minute walk from the site (take proper walking shoes !)The castle inn is the nearest pub and was great and dog friendly and the wardens booked us a table in the snug which we were grateful for as they were turning people away. There is loads of great walks from the site and quite a few pubs that you can walk to which means you can park up & relax. The bus service is ok too & we went to Tavistock which is lovely. The reception has a small shop with a couple of basic items & they will order you newspapers. There is also a farm shop nearby. The toilet block is kept spotlessly clean and is warm too in October! There is a dishwashing area, laundry, wifi hotspot , and Motorhome service point. There is a dog walking area onsite but dogs must be on leads but just off site is a sports field where we exercised our dog off the lead.Really couldn’t find anything we didn’t like about the site, it’s staff or the area!

The perfect location !  We were indeed blessed with the weather a wonderful autumnal weekend .
Views from our Motorhome were stunning .
We liked walking over the moors and the sunsets were wonderful
The staff are extremely friendly and welcoming facilities are clean and perfectly adequate .
Great walks and attractions all within walking distance including a great farm shop and two wonderful pubs . What more do you need for that perfect weekend away
This site has certainly gone to our “must visit” again list !!

Our favourite caravan site.  We come to Lydford C&C site about 6 times a year. It is a perfect site with the friendliest staff you could ever meet. There is no need to use the car as you can get everything you need within a 10 minute walk – basics in the reception shop, gourmet bits and pieces in the farm shop (they even make you burgers if you ask them), and an excellent pub in the village. On top of this, there are so many good walks, you can go on a different one every day. The best one is along the West Devon Way to Brentor, then catch the bus back to Lydford. Oh, and you have to go to the top of Brat Tor and admire the view from Widgery Cross.

Well organised site.  Arrived to spend 3 nights here unfortunately the 1st evening I ended up in Exeter a&e so had to return home but the site is very well maintained, great views and walking but could not explore everything…. obviously.
We had even joined national trust to explore the gorge next day.
When I fell ill they were very helpful for which I wish to congratulate them for their helpfulness, even offered me 3 nights which we missed to take later in season …something other sites have never done if we left early but being as it is 350 miles I don’t think we will take up the offer but a big thanks for that.
“2night caravan holiday ”
A really great campsite. All the staff were very happy and helpful. A very well kept site and the shower/toilet block always clean and tidy.
An on site shop with all the essentials. If you go to the top of the campsite theres a really good view across the moor which is only a couple of minutes drive away. The site is in a very quiet spot so very relaxing. Cannot see why anyone could write a bad review of this site.

Touring by Motorcycle.  Welcoming from the start. Clean and warm shower and utility block. It’s a small site with some hard, serviced pitches and a large field for those who like it more natural. Great view of Dartmoor to the east. The most endearing feature of this C&CC Affiliated site is the friendliness of the welcome and the helpfulness, even motorcyclists are welcome. I find that when the staff are like this it pervades the whole site – everyone says hello…
Nearby is an excellent pub/restaurant if you prefer not to do too much washing up. Lydford Gorge is spectacular and a power walk for the serious.

Perfect bank holiday weekend.  The wardens on this site are extremely friendly, helpful and accommodating. We saw and dealt with 6 of them and all equally good. We had booked grass and EHU and we are glad we did as the hard standing fields were much more crowded whereas the grass field was never full whilst we were there and we had a good distance between us and neighbouring vans. The views from the top of the tent field are fabulous. The wardens allowed us to stay on our pitch until 4pm which meant we could make the most of the Bank Holiday Monday by having another walk so this was really helpful, kind and most appreciated. We will definitely return as we are only an hour and a half away and we forgot how beautiful Dartmoor is – especially when the sun shines! This site has great access and is really well positioned to see it all. Great stuff – thank you!

Excellent site.  We visited this site for a week in June.
The staff were friendly and helpful. We were made to feel very welcome and nothing was too much trouble for them.
The site was well laid out with plenty of space between pitches. The toilets were spotlessly clean.
We had a fantastic view of the nearby tors from our pitch.
This is probably the best and friendliest site we have visited and we will definitely be visiting again soon.

Friendly and inviting.  Stayed here for one night with my partner. All the staff are very friendly and go out of their way to make you feel welcome. Colin made us feel at home and was very helpful. The staff really made for an enjoyable stay. The pitch was spacious for our campervan and the facilities were clean.

Lovely friendly caravan site.  Have just spent a week at this caravan site. Very friendly staff from when we arrived. Showed and marked on a map things that may be of interested to us. Took us to different pitches and asked which one we would like (with our large twin axle and pick up it is quite a big asking). Security very good gate open and shut as you go in or out, they are always there to help you. Toilet block very clean. Free wifi can be picked up in the laundry room but I found as we were not far from there we could get in the caravan. All they ask is if you would like to donate for a good cause. All in all a very nice week away weather could have been better but can’t have it all ways. Shall be back.

Lovely Site.  We stopped on the way back from Cornwall, for 3 days.with the Caravan
Wish we had booked for longer.A lovely grass pitch, plenty of space, and views.
The welcome was great.A lovely clean site.Free Wi Fi in Wash Room.Best reception
And a short walk to the Village Pub.Which serves great food. Also near the Granite Way cycle/walk Way.to Oakhampton.A good flat ride for all, ages, though a hill at the end into the Town.Lydford Gorge well worth a visit, but steep, and expensive if not in the National Trust.
Will return to this camp site if in the area.Oh yes , a bus stop very near the site
Thanks all at the site

Great views from the tent pitch area.  Great site for camping, friendly helpfull staff. Great base for walks on the moor and trips to the coast. The tent pitches are on an elevated area with great views on three of the Dartmoor Thors. Dog friendly with a special circular track on the premices itself for walking your dog.

They know about customer service……..    This site is affiliated to the CC but not fettered by all the rules and regulations that are involved in CC. The reviews do not lie. This is an extremely friendly site nicely laid out over three fields – Lyd Field is closest to the amenity block and Tavy Field which has views across Dartmoor. The third field has camping pitches and a very good dog walk for an overnight leg stretcher! The fields are well laid out with plenty of space and a separate dog walking area around the edge of the field. Dogs have to be kept on a lead here but there is a sports field very near to the site entrance where dogs can be let off the lead for a good run around.
The site is well maintained, as are the amenity areas. My only criticism would be that the showers could do with updating. There are no shops in Lydford but there is a good selection of basic supplies at the reception shop. However The Lydford Farm Shop is only a short walk away along the road and it is an Aladdin’s Cave of fresh food, local meats, milk eggs, packet and dried goods. Obviously more expensive than your average supermarket but it is good quality food. The reception shop sells a range of basic foods. You can order your daily paper for a small delivery charge.
We were on foot the whole time so didn’t range more than a five mile radius from the site but there are plenty of walking routes to choose. A bus stop near the site entrance takes you to Okehampton and Tavistock if you want a change of scenery.
Lydford Gorge is amazing and is only half a mile away. The Castle Inn is about ten minutes walk away. The food and ales are excellent. The Dartmoor Inn is very near the Farm Shop and The Fox and Hounds a bit further along the road.
Despite the weather, quite cold at times, we did plenty of walking, enjoyed ourselves.
This has to be one of the most friendly sites we have stayed on. We were greeted by name on arrival and even though it was only 12 noon we were shown to our pitch straightaway. I think all the staff had attended ‘Charm School’. Nothing was too much trouble, waited while we took on water and once we were settled came to make sure there was nothing we needed.
Wifi was available in the laundry room, this signal wasn’t that strong but better than expected for a remote rural area.
Before I conclude this review I feel I must comment about ‘unimpressed’s review’. Without knowing any of the circumstances I feel that ‘Unimpressed’ has given a completely false picture of this campsite with these negative comments. We were staying at the same time. At no no time did we encounter RULES being enforced, it is not unreasonable to expect to have to pay a delivery charge for a morning newspaper, it is not unusual to have to pay to use a hairdryer in the shower block, some even charge for showers! The showers do need modernising but they were very clean and perfectly adequate. Finally, as I have already said, the staff were fantastic.

At The Top.  Stayed at Lydford site 25 June-8 July 2016.  The wardens were At The Top for being friendly, helpful and just downright wonderful.  Three days after our arrival it rained like it was going out of fashion!  The inside of our large awning ended up being partly under water due to the high water table.  We casually mentioned this to the Head Warden Ian, who immediately came to inspect the problem and told us he wanted to help us all he could.  He offered us another pitch, but we loved where we were on a grass pitch in the beautiful field. He provided us with a large tarpaulin, rubber mats and a few other items to enable us to stay dry. He was brilliant. All the wardens were very helpful and friendly all the time and nothing was too much trouble for them. No grumpy faces whatever time of day or night! The site was also At The Top for its location, stunning views from the top of the site, surrounding countryside, local pubs and the dog walk was the best I’ve ever seen.  The site was immaculate. Lydford village is delightful especially having a pub within walking distance of the site.  Lydford Gorge is amazing. Cycling and walking paths wonderful.  Nearby villages quirky and well worth a visit; again lots of pubs within a short drive with yummy food and excellent beer/wine. We had a delightful holiday in a very peaceful and beautiful area.  Try it, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Testimonials from June 2016

Excellent location. Great site, extremely helpful wardens, excellent dog walking from the site, access to Dartmoor itself less than a mile from the site and good(food) pubs within walking distance. We will be back!

Devon at its best. Our second stay at site but this time included over the Bank Holiday so we were a little concerned it may be a bit too busy or noisy. Need not have worried it was just great with good weather showing off Devon. The walks from the site are good with plenty of them suitable for the dog. For peace and quiet and a good place to let the dog run I can recommend the Lydford Forest (turn right at site entrance and right again at the junction and about 1 mile up the road turn left into the forest access road). It is mixed woodland and also has a river running through it.

Wardens were great! The site was grrrreat! The dog walk has one of the nicest views you could wish for. The showers and toilets were spotless!  The site was very peaceful and although the weather was not that good, there was many walks from the site that could be enjoyed. The wardens were so friendly and helpful and nothing was too much trouble for them. We had a lot of rain during the day, before we had to leave and the night before, they came to our van to say they would help us get the caravan off the pitch (our car is not the most powerful) All in all…..it was a enjoyable holiday and I would love to return one day

Excellent  This is largely a caravan park, but the owners were extremely helpful in finding us a nice spot for our tent at short notice .Very friendly, and the site is very well cared for and clean. Walking on Dartmoor very close by.

One of the best sites we have ever visited.  We have been caravanning for over 30 years and can honestly say this is one of the best sites we have been on and we have been on a lot. The welcome we received was second to none. The wardens were there to open the gate and appeared every time we came in or went out as if by magic! We were greeted with a smile and humour. Nothing too much trouble for them. The site was quiet and immaculate, couldn’t fault a thing. The view from the top field was lovely and the wild flowers took our breath away. A piece of England how it should be.

Testimonials from May 2016

Excellent site with terrific wardens. We stayed here whilst visiting our son and his family in Plymouth. The site is wonderfully quiet, with fabulous views over Dartmoor. Whilst the toilet block is slightly dated it is kept very clean and the wardens work hard improving the facilities. The site is immaculately kept and the wardens are lovely and very sociable. This was our first AS site and we were suitably impressed. Thank you wardens for such an enjoyable stay.

Great Site.  Just stayed at this fantastic little AS site for 8 days and there is still more things to do when we go back for another visit, the site itself is kept spotless by the very hardworking wardens who are the friendliest and most helpful wardens we have come across in our 20+ years of camping, can’t wait to go back.

Our 4th stay and won’t be our last! Fab site Fab wardens  An absolute gem of a site, quiet, beautifully maintained, the most helpful, attentive wardens we have met (they actually treat you like intelligent human beings! As unlike some other sites on check in there are no demonstrations of pitching with miniature cars, caravans, dictating of reversing, blah blah!) All wardens are only too pleased to advise pitches with morning or evening sun, close to facilities or with a lovely view … just friendly, helpful, kind advice and exceptional gate opening skills thrown in too!  The local pub “The Castle” serves fabulous food suggest you book ahead if you want to take your dogs as there are 2 tables in “the snugg” where there is no fear of them being trodden on unlike the busy bar. Take a rug and they can sit up beside you on the long benches!! This lovely site, wherever you are pitched, is perfectly positioned to explore Northern Dartmoor and is a must if you are looking for peace and quiet away from the madness of everyday life, don’t hesitate to book as you won’t be disappointed.

Maiden voyage! This was our very first trip ever in our Motorhome so we decided to pick a site that wasn’t too far from home. We could not have done better had we tried. The facilities were immaculate and plentiful. The wardens were friendly and helpful, which since it was a trial run was good to know there was someone on hand if we had a problem. The site is well located for exploring Dartmoor with the Granite Way cycle trail very close by. A short walk takes you into Lydford village and we can recommend The Castle for a good pub meal. There is a ‘butty’ van on site on week day mornings which does take away breakfasts which was a definite tick in the box. I would not particularly recommend this site if you have children who like lots of entertainment, there is no play area and no swimming pool if that is what you are looking for. There is plenty of walking, fresh air and nature and the whole of Dartmoor to explore. There are a number of National Trust properties within easy reach which always have something for the children to do. All in all a very good couple of days and when we have bought ourselves some bikes we will be returning to tackle the cycle trail. Thank you Shirley & Co for a very successful maiden voyage.

Testimonials from April 2016

Seventh visit to Lydford.  We have been here many times now, and always find our stay an enjoyable one (even during inclement weather). The site is well maintained with friendly wardens. Some visitors seem to be of the “walk past you with head down brigade”, but then that’s their problem. Most others are very sociable indeed! Visiting the Gorge is a must if you are able to, and walking on Dartmoor doesn’t need to be described here. The Castle Inn allows dogs into the bar area, but not children (even well behaved ones) – although there is a back room and beer garden that allows these small people!!!! We will be back again soon.

Very clean and quiet.  Exceptionally clean site and facilities. Very helpful caretakers, providing a treasure hunt round the three fields which was fun to do with the grandchildren. Great for walking , in the middle of the moors, near lydford gorge falls (expensive if not a National Trust member)

Wonderful site.  We always have a good time when on a Caravan Club site, this was our first stay at an affiliated site, so we were slightly apprehensive.  Would the site live up to CC standards? What would the quality of amenities be like? Would the wardens be as good as a CC Site?

Well we were so satisfied with the excellent service from Hazel, Ian and all the team at Lydford Caravan and Camping site – the site is excellent, any apprehension we had was eroded when Hazel cheerily met us at the gate by our name.

We have just got home from a wonderful week at this site.  All the staff are welcoming and friendly, nothing was too much trouble for them – best wardens ever.  The price to stay here is reasonable. The onsite shop is well stocked with a lot of local produce at very reasonable prices.  The site is very well presented and the upkeep is to a very high standard.  The shower block is exceptionally clean with good pressure hot water.  “Frankies Food van” is often onsite at the weekend where good food is sold with a friendly smile (burgers, bacon rolls, jacket potatoes etc).   All the staff at Lydford are fantastic and the site is very well maintained

Highly recommend this site and will re-visit as soon as we can.

Great site on Dartmoor.  A very friendly, clean, well laid out and very well run site. Excellent welcome and they work with you to find you a suitable pitch. Very clean toilet/shower block. Easy to access laundry, chemical waste and water points. Also has on site shop and gas.
Buses run close by, walks to the moors also nearby. Lydford gorge is a mile away and worth a visit. Lydford is a nice little village with a good pub and lots of history.

Best site ever visited !!   My husband and I have just returned home after spending 16 nights at this superb campsite. We have never stayed on such a friendly site ever. It’s a very pretty site and it is kept pristine at all times. The shower block was immaculate.
But most of all it was the friendliness that stood out, all of the staff were extremely helpful and kind, and couldn’t do enough for you.
I think whilst we were there, we must have only opened the gate ourselves about twice, as other times when we drove up someone would appear instantly to do the gate in any weather too. And when we left to come home, talk about a Guard of Honour, all 6 staff waved us off, which has never happened before.
Also Lydford is ideally situated for exploring Devon East & West, and having Tavistock so near too for any supplies you may need, as well as a Farm shop nearby. The local pub “The Castle Inn”  served exceptionally good meals too.
So if you decide to explore Devon near to Dartmoor ‘Lydford Campsite’ is the place to stay.

Testimonials from March 2016

Brilliant.  This is the best site I have been to so far. The staff are so friendly and helpful and cannot do enough. On the edge of the moors with excellent views. Lydford Gorge is a must see and an excellent walk. Do not take children it’s too rocky. I would definitely come again. Thanks again

A breath of fresh air!  Just arrived home from our first visit to this site. We were pleasantly surprised to find the facilities as per the c club standard, as is the site in general, wardens very friendly, informative and helpful. As mentioned in previous posts, the Gorge is a must visit, easy walking distance from the site, be prepared for the ‘come and join us’ hard sell at the pay kiosk, by the National Trust bods. We caught the bus to Okehampton and walked the Granite Way back, a good 9 miles, a bit of plod, but a flat easy plod. Visited the Castle Inn a couple of times, lovely atmosphere, excellent food and value for money, can’t say the same for the Dartmoor Inn. Didn’t walk the moor much, weather too cold. We’re saving that for next time.

Testimonials from September/October 2015

Hard working wardens.  Just had a lovely week here. The site wardens are very friendly and helpful, nothing is too much trouble. A lovely site right next to the Granite Way cycle route into Okehampton. Be aware that it’s not 6 miles as stated on the CC leaflet but about 8 1/2 .  Lovely walks from the site up the Tor and also Lydford Gorge too

Wow.  What a lovely peaceful site with fantastic views, spotlessly clean facilities and some of the friendliest and helpful staff I have ever met. Will definitely revisit.

Wow indeed!   The club could learn a lot from how this reasonably priced AS is run. One hundred percent agree with the previous appraisal of the site.  It’s the little things that count like the towel rails in the shower cubicles in addition to ample hooks to hang your clothing on and the nested shelving for soap and shampoo. There is fantastic walking from the site, nearby Lydford Gorge is a must for the fitter walker. Bus route 46, Plymouth, Tavistock, Oakhampton passes through the village every two hours. There is also easy access to the Granite Way cycleway which runs the 8 miles from the village to Okehampton. There is a good pub, the Castle in the village but no shops. The nearest shop is a Farm shop on the A386 about one up hill mile away. Loved the site and it is one we will definitely use again for a longer stay.

Lovely stay in October.  This site is well located and easy to find. The wardens were amongst the best we have encountered. The site facilities are well up to club standards, and the views from the field are remarkable. Lydford Gorge is probably the finest natural site we have ever seen in England – a true gem that should not be missed. There are several excellent N.T. properties within the area and Finch Foundry must be seen. Tavistock,Okehampton and to our surprise Plymouth were all very pleasant to visit with some lovely local shops and pubs. A wonderful five night stay at a highly recommended site.

Excellent site. We have just spent 4 nights on this well kept site.  The toilets and showers are very clean and the  wardens friendly and helpful. The site is within walking distance of Lydford Gorge and the Granite Way cycle trail which has spectacular views across Dartmoor. Tavistock is about a 15 minute drive away.

Wonderful site. We’ve returned today after spending four nights at this lovely friendly, reasonably priced campsite. It’s a perfect location if you have a motorhome as the buses to Tavistock, Okehampton and Plymouth run from the end of the lane (2 minutes walk) and you have a fantastic pub (Castle Inn) and the stunning National Trust Lydford Gorge within easy walking distance…

Really good campsite.Very good rates, really helpful staff, beautiful location. Everything you could want from a campsite. I camped here whilst cycling the Devon coast to coast from North to South, it made a good place to break the journey. Great food in the local pub. You can wake up to views of Dartmoor. Top notch…

Three night stay. My husband and I stayed here for three nights along with our two dogs. Couldn’t ask for a better camp site. Staff were friendly and very attentive, they even offered us their TV when ours stopped working. Plenty of lovely walks for the dogs. Showers and toilets were spotless and plenty of hot water. As newbies to motor homes and caravanning I can safely say we will return.
